May 18 International Research Institute Prepares for 2027 World Sociology Conference in Gwangju

- Embarks on globalization of May 18 Research

5‧18 International Research Institute embarked on preparation of 2027 World Sociology Conference with Korea Sociology Association

ISA World Sociology Conference has been being held every 4 years since year of 1962, and It is a Conference & Sociology Association on the largest scale in sociology field which over 4,000 sociologists gather from around the world. In the year of 2027, the 21st Conference is scheduled to be held in Gwangju, South Korea, followed by the 20th Conference which was held in Melbourne from June 25th~July 1st, 2023. It is 3rd time that Gwangju was designated in Asia after Japan, India

Last June 13th, 5‧18 International Research Institute had promised to cooperate with Korea Sociology Association for research exchanges and the 20th & 21st ISA World Sociology Conference. Both institutes had set foot on in cooperation started in Melbourne, with ‘the 20th ISA World Sociology Conference 2023’, its companionship would last until ‘the 21st ISA World Sociology Conference 2027’ which is due in 2027

As part of the cooperation, the 5‧18 Memorial Foundation 5‧18 International Institute co-organized the '20th ISA World Sociological Conference 2023' and the 'Korea Night 2023' in Melbourne, Australia.

'Korea Night 2023', co-organized by the 5‧18 Memorial Foundation, the 21st ISA World Sociological Conference 2027 Organizing Committee, the Korean Sociological Association, and sponsored by the Korea Tourism Organization and the Gwangju Tourism Foundation, was held on Tuesday, June 27, at 9 p.m. in Melbourne with the participation of about 100 sociologists from around the world. The 5‧18 International Research Institute encouraged sociologists to visit Gwangju, the host city of the 21st ISA World Sociological Conference 2027, and introduced them to the current state of research on the 5‧18 Democratic Uprising.

The 5‧18 International Research Institute aims to introduce the history and research trends of the May 18 Democratic Uprising to sociologists around the world at the 21st ISA World Sociological Congress 2027, which will be held in Gwangju in four years. To this end, the institute is exploring ways to globalize 5‧18 research, such as translating 5‧18 oral(verbally logged) materials and research books.

Meanwhile, the 21st ISA World Sociological Conference 2027 will be held from July 4 to 10, 2027 in Gwangju, South Korea.
