What we do

Research Support

Call for Papers

연구_논문_공모_518
MIRI supports research on the May 18 Democratic Uprising through an annual call for academic papers on democracy in Korea in general and the Uprising in particular.
These calls for papers play a crucial role in our task as a platform to further understanding of the historical significance of the May 18 Democratic Uprising and its impact on democracy in South Korea.
Through them, we encourage scholars from diverse academic fields and backgrounds to explore the various aspects of the Uprising through rigorous academic inquiry and analyze the Uprising’s influence on democracy and social change in South Korea.

Workshops

518신진연구자워크숍 MAY LAB
MIRI organizes research workshops to foster the academic engagement of junior researchers and ensure the continuity of research on the May 18 Democratic Uprising.
Through the May Lab Workshop for junior research and the May 18 Academy Network, researchers explore diverse perspectives on the May 18 Democratic Uprising, expand research themes, and promote academic exchange.

Aims

  • Encourage junior scholars’ academic interest in May 18 to ensure the long-term viability of May 18 research.
  • Share, discuss and suggest research topics and agendas to junior scholars interested in May 18 and related themes like freedom, justice, democracy, human rights, and peace, thereby fueling future academic research.
  • Establish a network of May 18 researchers through annual calls for papers and the May Lab program as a specialized training program for May 18 researchers.
