About Us
MIRI
The May 18 International Research Institute was established in 2023 to facilitate research on May 18 globally
1. Agenda Setting regarding the May 18 Democratic Uprising and spreading the May 18 spirit
- Organize and support global conferences and symposia in the field of freedom, justice, democracy, human rights, peace and May 18
- Promote May 18 research to the public through lectures by researchers
2. Building a platform and network for research on freedom, justice, democracy, human rights, and peace
- Joint conferences on various topics related to May 18 to build up a research network
- Run programs to support and fund individual researchers as well as research institutes
3. Sharing the May 18 spirit with all ‘global citizens’
- Collect and translate oral histories from Korean: Our researchers are translating the testimonies of the May 18 records, listed as UNESCO Memory of the World, in order to share them with the rest of the world
- Publish and translate various May 18-related materials to foster the globalization of the May 18 Democratic Uprising
- Construct databases and provide data services for the systematic collection and dissemination of May 18-related research results
4. Suggesting policy directions to follow-up on the May 18 Democratization Movement Truth Commission’s findings
- As the central research institute for May 18-related research, we work on a constructive agenda to foster May 18-related fact-finding
