5‧18 International Research Institute, What is 5‧18 and Responsibility?
2023 5‧18 International Forum held (Nov. 2-4)

From November 2 to 4, the 5‧18 International Institute (an academic research institute under the Board of Trustees of the 5‧18 Memorial Foundation) will host the 2023 5‧18 International Forum on the theme of "5‧18 and Responsibility" at the 5‧18 Memorial Cultural Center.
On Thursday, November 2, at 2 p.m., the opening reception, a screening of the documentary Good Light, Good Air (Lim Heung-soon, 2021), and a Q&A with the director will be held at the Democratic Hall. The opening reception will be attended by Gwangju Metropolitan Mayor Kang Ki-jeong and Argentine Ambassador to Korea Emiliano Weisselfitz. On Friday, November 3, an international academic conference on the theme of "5‧18 and Responsibility" will be held at 10 a.m. in Daedong Hall. On Saturday, November 4, the next Forum topic discussion and the Academy Network meeting of academic researchers/institutions will be held in the Owol Memorial Hall.
At the International Conference on Friday, November 3, Professor Ichiro Tomiyama (Global Studies, Toshisha University, Japan) will give a presentation on "Responsibility as Relationality: Thinking about Violence and Beyond," and Professor Kim Sang bong (Department of Philosophy, Chonnam National University) will give a presentation on "Between the Ethics of Response and the Ethics of Responsibility," and engage in a dialog with participants on the topic of "What is Responsibility?
In the afternoon, under the themes of "Historical Events and Responsibility" and "5‧18 and Social Responsibility," the panelists will discuss 5‧18, Responsibility, and Justice (Park Kyeong-seop, Research Fellow at the 5‧18 International Institute), Jimmy Carter's Human Rights Diplomacy Policy and Its Application to Korea (David Butterworth, Northumbria University), The Ethical Responsibility of Martial Law Forces in the 5‧18 Democratic Movement (Kang Hyeon-jeong, Department of Philosophy, Chonnam National University), and Social Responsibility and 5‧18 through Transitional Justice (Kim Heon-joon, Department of Political Science and Diplomacy, Korea University).
The conference will be streamed live on the 5‧18 Memorial Foundation's YouTube channel, and simultaneous English and Japanese interpretation will be provided on-site.
The 5‧18 International Forum has prepared various programs, including archive exhibitions and documentary screenings, to help not only professional researchers but also citizens understand the issue.
From October 31 to November 11, an archive exhibition on '5‧18 and Responsibility' will be held at the exhibition hall on the basement floor of the 5‧18 Memorial Culture Center. The exhibition will feature folk art works that recreate 5‧18 after 5‧18, documents related to 'punishing those responsible,' and contents that recreate the 5‧18 photo exhibitions held in Busan and Gwangju in 1987. On Thursday, November 2, at 10:30 a.m., Professor Lee Sol (State University of New York at Stony Brook) will present a lecture on "5‧18 and Responsibility in Culture and Art," followed by a conversation with Na Kyeong-taek (photographer), Kim Seong-cheol (Busan Democratic Park), Kang Ju-wan (Roh Foundation Responsibility Researcher), and Han Jae-seop (Director of Gwangju Independent Film Center).
On Thursday, November 2, at 2:30 p.m., in the Democracy Hall on the first floor of the 5‧18 Memorial Cultural Center, the documentary Good Light, Good Air will be screened at the Democracy Hall on the first floor of the 5‧18 Memorial Cultural Center. <Good Light, Good Air is a documentary that reflects on the incidents of state violence in the cities of Gwangju (光州, Good Light) and Buenos Aires (Buenos Aires, Good Air), as well as the victims' ongoing truth-seeking campaigns, memories, and mourning. The screening will be followed by a GV with director Lim Heung-soon (Silver Lion at the Venice Biennale) and Dr. Kang So-hee (Chonnam National University).
Meanwhile, the 5‧18 International Research Institute was a presidential run Pledge/commitment to the Gwangju Metropolitan Area by the president Yoon Seok-yeol government, and the 5‧18 Memorial Foundation established the '5‧18 International Research Institute' as a research institute under the board of directors in January this year.
